Washington, D.C. (September 4, 2024) – This Congress, we’ve seen the bipartisan support grow for the Patients’ Right to Know Their Medication Act (H.R. 1173), legislation that would standardize patient medication information (PMI), ensure that its readily available in printed form, and that the burden does not fall on pharmacies.
U.S. Representatives Buddy Carter (R-GA-1), Jared Golden (D-ME-2), Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD-2), and Bruce Westerman (R-AR-4) introduced H.R. 1173, and we’ve seen cosponsorship grow ever since.
In their own words, here is why they support the Patients’ Right to Know Their Medication Act:
“This is a common-sense update that will help patients, pharmacists, and drug manufacturers maintain the highest quality health care for all…” said Congressman Buddy Carter (R-GA-1).
“Our bipartisan bill requires information about medications to be printed, ensuring that every American who relies on a prescription has all the information they need to take it safely when they leave the pharmacy…” said Congressman Jared Golden (D-ME-2).
“I am proud to support this common sense, bipartisan bill that is simple and straightforward but potentially lifesaving,” said Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD-2).
“Legislation like this ensures that every patient, especially those in rural districts like mine, has access to the important information they need,” said Congressman Bruce Westerman (R-AR-4).
“When folks are prescribed medication, they need to know the proper way to take it. Plain and simple. That’s why I cosponsored the Patients’ Right to Know Their Medication Act to ensure this vital information is presented to all patients. It’s just common sense,” wrote Congressman David Trone (D-MD-6).

Chartered in 2001, the PPLA serves as the voice for our members, advocating for patient safety and risk communication by fighting to keep information on paper and readily accessible for patients and caregivers. This information helps drive the patient involvement model of health care, helping patients get the maximum benefits from the powerful drugs they take while minimizing risk.
