Press Release: PPLA
Washington, D.C. (May 16, 2024) – In case you missed it, a new report from POLITICO Prescription Pulse highlights the Pharmaceutical Printed Literature Association’s ongoing fight to protect accessible, printed medication information at the pharmacy. PPLA is advocating alongside Congressman Buddy Carter (R-GA), Congressman Jared Golden (D-ME), and others for the health and well-being of those taking prescription medication.
POLITICO Prescription Pulse:
Reps. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) and Jared Golden (D-Maine) have co-sponsored legislation since 2019 that would require the FDA to approve a standardized, one-page format for prescription drug information — including the product’s indications, risks and interactions with other drugs or food — given to patients on paper when they pick up medications from the pharmacy.
…
The Pharmaceutical Printed Literature Association said in a statement this month that the proposed [FDA] rule “would implement an unproven [patient medication information] design and push PMI onto a digital, not printed, format via a QR code or website link.”
…
Carter, who’s a pharmacist, told Prescription Pulse he supports the legislation because broadband isn’t accessible to all rural Americans and older patients who might not be tech-savvy.
“I want to err on the side of making sure that people get their information … because I know how vitally important it is,” he said.

The Patients’ Right to Know Their Medication Act (H.R. 1173) requires drug manufacturers to provide printed PMI, approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for every American taking prescription medications. This legislation would guarantee that all patients receive clear, printed Patient Medication Information (PMI) at the pharmacy, protecting rural and older patients without access to broadband or personal technology. H.R. 1173 would reduce patients’ chances of medication non-adherence, which takes the lives of over 120,000 people every year.
The Patients’ Right to Know Their Medication Act (H.R. 1173) was introduced by Reps. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA), Bruce Westerman (R-AR), Jared Golden (D-ME), and Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD). In addition, it is cosponsored by Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), Chellie Pingree (D-ME), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), David Trone (D-MD), Terri Sewell (D-AL), Chris Pappas (D-NH), Jill Tokuda (D-HI), Brad Schneider (D-IL), Mary Sattler Peltola (D-AK), and Marie Gluesenkamp Pérez (D-TX).
The Pharmaceutical Printed Literature Association
The Pharmaceutical Printed Literature Association is a trade group serving as the voice for our members, advocating for patient safety and risk communication by fighting to keep information on paper and readily accessible for patients and caregivers. This information helps drive the patient involvement model of health care, helping patients get the maximum benefits from the powerful drugs they take while minimizing risk.
