The Pharmaceutical Printed Literature Association (PPLA) Applauds the Senate Appropriations Committee for Protecting Patient Safety

Washington D.C. (June 28, 2023) – The Pharmaceutical Printed Literature Association (PPLA) applauds the Senate Appropriations Committee for protecting patient safety by including bipartisan policy in the Agriculture & Food and Drug Administration (FDA) appropriations legislation advanced on Thursday.

For the last decade, Congress has worked across the aisle and in both chambers to stop the FDA’s poorly thought out and harmful “Electronic Distribution of Prescribing Information for Human Prescription Drugs, Including Biological Products” proposed rule. This proposed rule would jeopardize the health of the American people by eliminating hard copies of critical medicine prescribing information, upon which physicians, pharmacists, and other health care professionals rely.

Studies indicate that relying on electronic labeling as a complete substitute for paper labeling could adversely impact public health, especially for prescribers and patients in rural areas and those impacted by severe weather. Studies have also found that pharmacists who, under the proposed rule, would have to print these in their pharmacies would have less time to counsel patients.

We applaud Congress’s bipartisan efforts to keep patients safe and are confident this language will again be included in the final Appropriations legislation.

About the Pharmaceutical Printed Literature Association

Chartered in 2001, the PPLA serves as the voice for our members, advocating for patient safety and risk communication by fighting to keep information on paper and readily accessible for patients and caregivers. This information helps drive the patient involvement model of health care, helping patients get the maximum benefits from the powerful drugs they take while minimizing risk.
