Hancock Health Pays $55K to Release Hospital Files Following Ransomware Attack

FierceHealth.com, an online publisher that specializes in healthcare news, reported today that Hancock Health paid a $55,000 ransom to hackers to regain control of its clinical IT systems at Hancock Regional Hospital. Although the impacted files were backed up, restoring them would have taken days. The hospital’s CEO stated it made sense to pay, given the situation with an impending ice and snow storm and flu season. However, experts warn that paying ransom can make hospitals targets for future attacks.
